I am part of HumanEra, a wonderful team of human factors specialists in North York General Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We use direct observations, simulations, interviews, focus groups and other methods to understand how the healthcare system is working, and how it can be improved. In particular, we are looking for ways to improve patient and staff safety, as well as healthcare efficiency and resilience.

Our methods are focused on capturing real world practice, rather than how work is imagined. We directly observe front line practice to see how organizational policies, workplace environments, technologies, culture and training meet. What people say, what people do, and what people say they do are rarely aligned - this discrepancy impedes the development of truly effective solutions.

Outside of work, I have an interest in somatic practices as a way to improve self-understanding. I have attended trainings in somatic trauma programs, martial arts and the Feldenkrais Method.
